Welcome @ Liver Cell Biology Lab

Research team at the Brussels Health Campus (Vrije Universiteit Brussel)

Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy - Department of Biomedical Sciences

The LIVR team is part of the VUB-research cluster "Liver Cell Biology & Toxicology"

LIVR at VUB and Hepatology at Ghent University form the "Translational Liver Cell Biology Alliance"

Prof. Leo van Grunsven is head of LIVR since 2009.

In general, the objectives of LIVR are to contribute to the characterization of the different liver cell types in healthy and pathological conditions, to gain a better insight in the mechanisms of liver regeneration and the pathogenesis of liver fibrosis and portal hypertension.

The ultimate purpose of our studies is to contribute to :

  • the development of therapeutics for liver fibrosis and portal hypertension
  • the development of autologous or allogeneic cell transplantation techniques, and to treatment of chronic liver diseases via stimulation of the proliferation of local progenitor cells (liver regeneration as alternative for transplantation)

At the start of 2017, the LIVR group consists of 3 senior scientists and postdocs, 4 PhD students, 1 master student and 5 technicans.
